A 68-year-old who allegedly pirated satellite TV programming as well as being involved in the trafficking of devices for stealing DBS service was recently sentenced in federal court for his actions.
Walter J. Buchholz, a resident of Amherst, N.Y., was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and was ordered by U.S. District Judge John Elfvin to pay $308,000 in restitution to EchoStar. The announcement concerning Buchholz was made by acting U.S. Attorney Kathleen Mehltretter.
The U.S. attorney's office in Buffalo said Buchholz pled guilty June 10 to mail fraud and violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, both felony charges. The guilty pleas and sentence followed investigations by the Cyber Crime Squads of the FBI in New York and California.
Buchholz elected to have charges filed in San Jose transferred to Buffalo, where he entered his guilty plea. Both charges involved piracy of satellite TV programming offered by EchoStar's DISH Network and trafficking devices necessary to steal DISH Network's satellite TV programming, the attorneys office said.
